The 7 Most Important Lessons
1. The System Works — If You Let It
42.9% win rate with 1:3 R:R is mathematically profitable. I proved it over 110 trades. The system never failed. I failed the system — 23 times out of 110 trades, I broke at least one checklist rule. Those 23 trades had a 30% win rate. The 87 trades where I followed the rules had a 58% win rate.
Lesson: Follow the checklist. Every time. No exceptions.
2. The 1% Rule Is Sacred
I survived two 4-trade losing streaks (-4% each time). At 5% risk, those would have been -20% each. I would have blown the account by Trade 40.
Lesson: 1% risk isn't conservative. It's the difference between surviving and dying.
3. Kill Zones Are Non-Negotiable
My win rate during 9-10 AM EST: 65%. My win rate during 12-2 PM EST: 37%. Same strategy. Same pairs. Same checklist. Only timing changed.
Lesson: Only trade during London (2-5 AM EST) and NY (7-10 AM EST) kill zones.
4. Gold Is the Best SMC Market
XAU/USD had the highest win rate (57%), largest average move (+2.8R average), and cleanest structure of the three pairs traded.
Lesson: If you're learning SMC, start with gold.
5. Compounding Is the Secret Weapon
Trade 1: +3R = +$150. Trade 110: +3R = +$450. Same trade, same rules, 3x the profit. The first 50 trades grew the account by $1,910. The last 35 trades grew it by $5,181. That's compounding.
Lesson: Don't withdraw profits early. Let them compound.
6. Losses Are the Cost of Business
57 losses out of 110 trades. Each one cost exactly 1R. But the 57 wins averaged 2.8R each. The losses are the fuel that makes the system work — you can't have winners without losers.
Lesson: Stop fearing losses. A loss at 1% risk is just business overhead.
7. The System Works — You're the Variable
Every time I blamed the system, I eventually found that I broke a rule. Every time I followed the rules and still lost, the system recovered within 5 trades. The system is never the problem. The trader is always the variable.
Lesson: Before you change your strategy, check if you followed it.
What I'd Do Differently
- I would have trusted the system sooner. I wasted 23 trades breaking rules. If I'd followed the checklist from Trade 1, I'd have reached $15K in ~90 trades instead of 110.
- I would have journaled from Day 1. My journal started at Trade 15. Trades 1-14 were reconstructed from memory. The journal revealed patterns I couldn't see in real-time.
- I would have started with gold only. I traded EUR/USD and GBP/USD from the start. Gold had the highest win rate. I should have mastered one pair before adding others.
- I would NOT have changed the 1% risk. Even when the account was at $12K, 1% risk was correct. The temptation to increase risk is the temptation to blow the account.
- I would have read the SMC cheat sheet every morning. Not because I forgot the rules, but because the discipline of reading them daily reinforced the habit of following them.
