SMT Divergence Explained: How ICT Traders Read Correlated Pairs
SMT divergence (Smart Money Technique divergence) is an ICT concept for spotting a disagreement between two markets that normally move together. When one market takes out a high or low and its correlated partner refuses to follow, that crack often marks the end of a move.
It is a confirmation tool. It does not replace structure, liquidity, or a defined entry model.
What is SMT divergence?
EUR/USD and GBP/USD usually rise and fall together because both are priced against the dollar. The dollar index (DXY) usually moves the opposite way to both.
SMT divergence appears when that relationship breaks at an important level:
- Bearish SMT: EUR/USD makes a higher high while GBP/USD makes a lower high. One pair ran the buy-side liquidity, the other could not. Buying pressure is thinning.
- Bullish SMT: EUR/USD makes a lower low while GBP/USD makes a higher low. One pair swept sell-side liquidity, the other held.
- Inverse SMT with DXY: DXY makes a lower low, but EUR/USD fails to make a higher high. Because the two are inversely correlated, EUR/USD should have broken higher. It did not.
Where does SMT divergence matter?
A divergence in the middle of a range means very little. It carries weight only when it forms at a place where you already expect a reaction:
- At a higher-timeframe liquidity pool, such as the previous day's high or low.
- Inside a higher-timeframe order block or fair value gap.
- During a kill zone, when institutional volume is present.
How do you trade it?
- Mark the liquidity level on both correlated charts.
- Wait for one market to sweep its level while the other fails to.
- Do not enter on the divergence alone. Wait for a market structure shift on the lower timeframe.
- Enter on the retracement into the fair value gap or order block left by that shift.
- Place the stop beyond the swept high or low.
Many traders take the entry on the weaker market for shorts (the one that failed to make the higher high) and the stronger market for longs.
Common mistakes
- Comparing the wrong swings. Both charts must be measured over the same time window and the same pair of swing points.
- Using it without context. SMT at no particular level is noise.
- Treating it as a signal. It tells you something is off. Structure tells you when to act.
Frequently asked questions
Which pairs work for SMT divergence?
EUR/USD with GBP/USD, AUD/USD with NZD/USD, and either of those against DXY. Index traders compare the Nasdaq with the S&P 500.
Which timeframe is best?
Mark the level on the 1-hour or 4-hour chart and look for the divergence on the 15-minute or 5-minute chart.
Does SMT divergence work on gold?
Gold is often compared with silver or against DXY, but the correlation is looser than between the major currency pairs, so treat it with more caution.
