SMC Case Study 8: USD/JPY SELL -60 Pips ❌ — The Entanglement Direction Error
TL;DR: USD/JPY SELL at 156.20, stopped at 156.80 for -60 pips. The DXY strength thesis was correct but applied the WRONG direction to a USD-base pair. USD strength = USD/JPY UP (not down). This case study shows the #1 entanglement error in SMC trading and the correction protocol.

What Went WRONG
The quantum entanglement analysis correctly identified DXY strength as the dominant thesis. But it applied a universal "SELL everything" direction. This was correct for USD-counter pairs but WRONG for USD-base pairs:
| Pair | USD Position | DXY Strength = | Correct Direction | Our Direction | Result |
|------|-------------|-----------------|-------------------|---------------|--------|
| EUR/USD | Counter | EUR/USD DOWN | SELL ✅ | SELL | -8 pips |
| GBP/USD | Counter | GBP/USD DOWN | SELL ✅ | SELL | +6 pips |
| AUD/USD | Counter | AUD/USD DOWN | SELL ✅ | SELL | +22 pips |
| XAU/USD | Priced in USD | Gold DOWN | SELL ✅ | SELL | +7 pips |
| USD/JPY | BASE | USD/JPY UP | BUY ✅ | SELL ❌ | -60 pips |
The error: USD is the BASE currency in USD/JPY. When USD strengthens, USD/JPY goes UP, not down.
The Fix: Entanglement Correction Protocol
When DXY strength is detected:
- SELL USD-counter pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD, NZD/USD
- BUY USD-base pairs: USD/JPY, USD/CHF, USD/CAD
The correction signal (USD/JPY BUY at 156.50) recovered 37 of 60 lost pips, turning the batch from net negative to net positive.
Key Takeaway
Always check which side of the pair USD is on. This is the #1 entanglement error in SMC trading. DXY strength = BUY USD-base + SELL USD-counter. DXY weakness = SELL USD-base + BUY USD-counter.
Q: What is a base vs counter currency?
A: In USD/JPY, USD is the base (first) and JPY is the counter (second). When USD strengthens, USD/JPY goes up (USD base appreciates) but EUR/USD goes down (USD counter appreciates).
